White poppies event for peace and remembrance (Saddleworth)

Saddleworth Peace Group invite you to join them on Saturday 9th November in laying a wreath of white poppies at the foot of the Peace Pole in St Chad's Gardens, Uppermill (outside Uppermill Library). All are welcome to come along.

White poppies have been worn for over 80 years – sometimes alone, sometimes alongside red poppies. The Peace Pledge Union (which distributes them) says that there are three elements to their meaning: remembrance for all victims of war; a commitment to peace; and a challenge to attempts to glamorise or celebrate war.

The Uppermill event will seek to remember all those killed in war, all those wounded in body or mind, the millions who have been made sick or homeless by war and the families and communities torn apart. We also remember those killed or imprisoned for refusing to fight and for resisting war.

White poppies are available at the event or in advance from Saddleworth Peace Group – please email saddleworthpg@yahoo.co.uk.
